What waste factor means
Waste is not insurance and it is not a safety margin. It is the material that physically ends up in the skip. When a row of planks reaches the far wall, the last plank gets cut, and the offcut either starts the next row or it does not — depending on how long it is and what the manufacturer's minimum stagger rule says. Every offcut too short to reuse is waste, and the percentage is simply how much of that a given room and layout produce.
That is why the number is not one number. A 20 by 30 room with a straight lay wastes less than a 6 by 8 bathroom, because the perimeter is a smaller share of the field. A diagonal wastes more than a grid because every perimeter piece is cut. An L-shaped room wastes more than a rectangle because it has two extra edges running through the middle of the layout.
There is a second, quieter cost that people leave out: the rip. The first and last rows of a floating floor are usually cut down the length of the plank so the two edge rows come out the same width. Those two long thin strips are almost never usable anywhere else. On a 12 by 14 room with a 7 inch plank, that is roughly 14 linear feet of ripped-off material — about 4 square feet gone before you have made a single cross cut.

Standard percentages by material
These are the figures an estimator will quote for a rectangular room with a straight layout and no complications. Treat them as the starting point, not the answer.

Broadloom carpet is the outlier worth understanding, because it is the one material where the waste is decided before you measure anything. It comes off a 12 foot wide roll. A room 13 feet wide needs a seam and a second 12 foot drop, and most of that second drop is offcut — a 13 by 16 room can easily hit 25% waste, which no percentage rule predicts. Ask the retailer for a seam diagram rather than a percentage.
When to go higher
Four conditions push the number up, and they stack. Each one is a real effect with a real cause, not a hedge.
- L-shaped or irregular room: add 2 points. Every inside corner creates a row that has to be cut at both ends instead of one.
- Floor under 40 square feet: add 3 points. In a small bathroom the perimeter is a huge fraction of the field, so almost every piece is a cut.
- Large format pieces, 24 inches or longer: add 3 points. The longer the piece, the more of it you throw away when you trim it to fit.
- First time installing: add 3 points. You will cut at least three pieces backwards. Everyone does.
A first-timer laying 12 by 24 tile in an L-shaped 35 square foot bathroom is at 10 + 2 + 3 + 3 + 3, which is 21%. That is not pessimism, it is arithmetic, and it is why small bathrooms so often need a second trip.
Three more situations deserve an extra point or two, and none of them appear on a store's estimate sheet. A floor with more than four fixed obstructions — a toilet flange, a floor vent, a column, a hearth — loses a whole piece at each one. A room where the walls are more than half an inch out of square over 12 feet produces a tapered cut on every perimeter piece. And any job where the product is being discontinued: if there is no chance of a top-up order, buy the extra box now rather than discovering in week two that the dye lot has gone.
Diagonal and herringbone
Layout beats material. Changing the pattern on the same floor with the same product moves the order more than switching from ceramic to porcelain does.

Diagonal costs 15% because every single piece that touches a wall is cut at 45 degrees, and the triangular offcut only fits the opposite wall if the room is perfectly square, which it is not. There is a partial fix: on a truly square room, cut the perimeter pieces in matched pairs from one tile, taking the two halves to opposite walls. It saves two or three points and it costs you an afternoon of careful measuring.
Herringbone costs 17% and up because each perimeter piece takes two cuts and the offcut has two wrong angles. It also needs a 2:1 piece — 3 by 6, 4 by 8, 6 by 12 — because that is the only ratio where the pattern closes on itself. Lay a 4 by 12 plank in single herringbone and it will not close; it has to go down in pairs, as a double herringbone.
Chevron is the most expensive of all at 19%, and it has a second cost people miss: chevron planks are mitred at the ends before they leave the factory. A cut piece cannot be re-mitred on site without a proper saw and a jig, so the perimeter offcuts are dead material. Expect to order chevron as a special order with a four to six week lead time, which also means no quick top-up if you come up short.
Attic stock
Attic stock is the material you deliberately keep after the job is done, and it is separate from the waste factor. Waste gets thrown away; attic stock goes in a cupboard.
Keep one full box of anything you expect to live with for more than five years. The reason is not damage during installation — it is damage in year four, when a chair leg gouges a plank or a dropped pan cracks a tile. Product lines are discontinued constantly and dye lots change between production runs, so a matching replacement two years later is usually impossible.
Store it flat, indoors, at living temperature. A box of LVP left in an unheated garage for three winters will not sit flat when you finally need it, and laminate stored against a damp wall will swell at the edges even inside its shrink wrap. Write the room and the lot number on the box in marker; in five years you will not remember which bedroom it came from.
One box on a 400 square foot floor is about 6% of the order and it is the cheapest insurance in the whole project. Is 10% waste enough for flooring?
For a rectangular room, a straight layout and a confident installer, yes. Add 2 points for an L-shaped room, 3 for a floor under 40 square feet, 3 for large format pieces and 3 if this is your first install.
Does the store take back unopened boxes?
Most big-box stores accept unopened, uncut cartons within 90 days with the receipt. Special orders and clearance lots usually are not returnable, which is exactly when you most want to be right.
Should I keep leftover flooring?
Keep one full box, flat and indoors. Dye lots change between production runs and discontinued lines disappear within a year or two, so a matching spare is the difference between a repair and a whole new floor.
Does the waste factor cover breakage in shipping?
No. Inspect every carton before the delivery driver leaves. Crushed corners on tile and water-damaged laminate cartons are the carrier’s problem on the day and yours the day after. Waste covers cutting, not damage in transit.
