4x8 vs 4x12 sheets

Sheet length is the decision that changes how much finishing work you do, and finishing is 80% of the labour on a drywall job.

A butt joint is where two square-cut sheet ends meet. There is no taper there, so the tape and the compound sit proud of the wall and have to be feathered out 16 to 24 inches on each side to hide the hump. A tapered seam, by contrast, sits in a recess and finishes flat with three quick passes. Every butt joint you avoid is half an hour of sanding you avoid.

Twelve foot sheets weigh about 82 pounds each and do not go up a stairwell or around a tight corner. Measure the path into the room before you order them.

Screws per sheet and spacing

On walls with framing at 16 inches on centre, run screws every 12 inches in the field and every 8 inches on the ceiling. That works out to about 36 screws for a 4 by 8 sheet and 50 for a 4 by 12.

Buy by weight: 1-1/4 inch coarse thread screws run about 320 to the pound, so a 20 sheet job needs roughly 2.5 pounds. Set them just below the paper without breaking it — a screw that tears the face paper holds nothing and will pop.

Use 1-1/4 inch for half inch board on wood, 1-5/8 for five eighths. On steel studs use fine thread.

Board thickness and type belong in the order alongside the count. Half inch is standard for walls; five eighths is required on ceilings framed at 24 inches on centre, on a garage ceiling under living space, and anywhere a fire rating applies. Moisture-resistant board goes behind a vanity and around a tub surround — but never as a tile substrate in a shower, where you need cement board or a foam board system. Mixing thicknesses on the same wall leaves a step at the joint that no amount of compound hides, so decide before the delivery.

How much mud and tape

Three coats over every seam, every inside corner and every screw dimple takes about 0.7 gallons of all-purpose compound per 100 square feet of board. A 4.5 gallon bucket covers roughly 600 square feet, so a normal bedroom takes one bucket with some left over.

Tape runs about 0.8 linear feet per square foot of board. A 500 foot roll covers about 600 square feet. Paper tape is stronger and mandatory in inside corners; mesh is faster on flats and needs setting compound rather than all-purpose over it.

Buy all-purpose for the taping coat and lightweight for the last two. Lightweight sands with almost no effort and that is where your weekend goes.

Corner bead is counted by the corner, not by the square foot, and it bears no relationship to the sheet count. Walk the room and count outside corners: a chimney breast with two returns is six lengths of bead on a job that otherwise needs none. Metal bead is nailed or screwed; paper faced bead is bedded in compound and finishes flatter but takes an extra drying day.

Common mistakes

  1. Hanging vertically in a house. Horizontal is standard residential practice: fewer sheets, the seam lands at a comfortable working height, and it ties the studs together.
  2. Butting a joint over a doorway. Never put a seam in line with the corner of an opening. That is where the wall flexes and the crack will follow it.
  3. Boarding the walls before the ceiling. Ceiling first, always, so the wall sheets support the ceiling edges.
  4. Too much mud on the first coat. Taping coat is thin, and its only job is to bed the tape. Building the joint is coats two and three.
  5. Sanding instead of wiping. A damp sponge on the corners removes ridges without sanding through the tape, and it does not fill the house with dust.
  6. Ordering per room rather than per house. Sheet counts for common room sizes across a whole job are in how many sheets of drywall.
  7. Forgetting the paint. New board and fresh compound are thirsty; plan the primer with the paint for 1,000 square feet numbers.

Frequently asked questions

How many sheets of drywall for a 12 by 12 room?

With 8 foot ceilings, 384 square feet of wall plus 144 of ceiling is 528 square feet. With 10% waste that is 581, which is 13 sheets of 4 by 12 or 19 sheets of 4 by 8.

Should I buy 4 by 8 or 4 by 12 sheets?

Use 12 foot sheets if you can get them into the room. They eliminate butt joints on most walls, and butt joints are the hardest thing to finish flat. Eight foot sheets are easier to carry and that is their only advantage.

How many screws per sheet of drywall?

About 36 for a 4 by 8 sheet on 16 inch centres. Pounds matter more at the register: 320 screws of 1-1/4 inch to the pound, so a 25 sheet job needs about 3 pounds.

How much joint compound do I need?

Roughly 0.7 gallons per 100 square feet of board for three coats, tape through finish. A 4.5 gallon bucket does about 600 square feet. Buy all-purpose for taping and lightweight for the finish coats.
