What this calculator assumes

  • The stagger model re-uses an offcut as the next row starter whenever it is longer than the minimum offset, which is what an installer actually does.
  • Expansion gaps do not change the square footage you buy, only where the cuts fall.
  • Waste is the higher of the pattern table and the waste the drawn layout produces.

How to use this calculator

Enter the room in feet and the plank in inches. The two numbers printed on the carton are what you want: a common LVP is 7 inches by 48, some are 9 by 60, a few are 6 by 36. Then set the coverage per carton, which is usually between 18 and 30 square feet.

Leave the pattern on plank stagger unless you are doing something unusual. The plan will draw each row with a randomised start length, keep the end joints apart, and re-use the offcut from the end of one row to begin the next — the same sequence you would follow on your knees with a utility knife.

Why LVP waste is higher than you think

Big-box stores quote 5% and hobbyist videos repeat it. On a square room with a 48 inch plank and a 12 foot wall, 5% is optimistic and 10% is the working number. Two things drive it.

Stagger requirements

Every manufacturer specifies a minimum offset between the end joints of adjacent rows — usually 6 inches, sometimes 8, occasionally a third of the plank length. That means you cannot simply start each row with whatever offcut you happen to have. If the offcut is 4 inches, it goes in the skip. If it is 30 inches, it starts the next row and costs you nothing. Which one you get is decided by the room width divided by the plank length, and almost no room divides evenly.

First and last row

The first row is usually ripped narrower so the last row is not a sliver, and the last row is ripped to fit whatever is left. Both rips are lengthwise, which means the offcut is a long thin strip that is useless anywhere else. On a 12 by 14 room with 7 inch planks, the room is 20.5 planks wide: you will rip the first row to about 4 inches and the last to about 3.5, and both strips are waste.

Four numbers matter. Coverage in square feet, which is the only one that goes in this calculator. Plank dimensions, which determine the cut plan. Wear layer thickness in mils — 12 mil for a bedroom, 20 mil for a kitchen or a rental, 28 mil if there are dogs. And the lot or run number, which must match across every carton you buy.

Total thickness is a fifth number people fixate on and it matters less than the wear layer. A 5 mm rigid core plank with a 6 mil wear layer will look worn in three years. A 4 mm plank with a 20 mil wear layer will not.

One more label detail decides where the plank can go: the core type. SPC is a stone-plastic composite, dense and dimensionally stable, and it is what you want over a slab, in a sunroom or anywhere the temperature swings. WPC is a wood-plastic composite, thicker and softer underfoot, warmer in a bedroom, but it expands more with heat — a south-facing room with large glass can move a WPC floor enough to open the seams. The box rarely says "SPC" in large letters; look for the core thickness and the weight, because SPC runs about 30% heavier for the same thickness.

Acclimation and underlayment

Rigid core LVP needs 48 hours in the room it will be installed in, flat and boxed, between 60 and 85 degrees. Skip it and the floor will gap at the seams in January. Flexible glue-down LVP needs the same treatment and a substrate flat to 3/16 inch over 10 feet.

Most rigid core planks arrive with the pad attached; adding a second pad underneath voids the warranty on almost every product, because the extra compression works the click joints apart. If the plank has no pad, buy the underlayment in the same square footage as the floor plus 5% for the seam overlaps, and get one with a vapour barrier if you are over a slab.

Common mistakes

  1. No expansion gap. A quarter inch at every wall, every pipe and every door jamb. A floating floor with no room to move will tent in the middle of the room by summer.
  2. Running the planks the wrong way. Lay them parallel to the longest wall or towards the main light source. Both look better and both waste less.
  3. Starting against the wall without checking it. Walls are not straight. Snap a line, scribe the first row to the wall, and keep every row after it square.
  4. Buying by the square foot instead of the carton. 220 square feet of need is 10 cartons of 24, not 9.2 cartons.
  5. Skipping attic stock. Keep one full carton. LVP lines are discontinued constantly and a single damaged plank in the middle of the floor is otherwise a full re-lay.

Frequently asked questions

How many boxes of vinyl plank do I need for 200 square feet?

At a 10% waste factor you need 220 square feet of product. With a 24 square foot box that is 10 boxes, which gives you 240 square feet and about 20 square feet of attic stock left over.

Why does LVP waste more than the 5% the store quotes?

Because the stagger rules force cuts. Every row starts with a cut plank, every row ends with one, and the offcut is only reusable when it is longer than the minimum offset, usually 6 inches. In a narrow room that is a lot of unusable ends.

Do I need an expansion gap with vinyl plank?

Yes. Rigid core LVP needs a quarter inch gap at every wall and every vertical obstruction. It does not change the square footage you buy, but it does change where your first and last row cuts land.

Can I install LVP over existing tile?

Usually yes, if the tile is flat, sound and the grout lines are under a quarter inch wide. Wide grout lines telegraph through thin planks. Skim the joints or float the floor first, and check the manufacturer instructions because it affects the warranty.

How much extra should I keep as attic stock?

One full box. Dye lots change, product lines get discontinued, and a single damaged plank in the middle of a floor is a miserable repair without a matching spare.
