What this calculator assumes

  • Bundle coverage varies by width inside the same product line — take the figure off the bundle you are buying.
  • The board length you enter is the average length in the bundle, used to draw the layout.
  • Random-length product needs about two points more waste than the plan alone predicts.

How to use this calculator

Enter the room in feet, then the board width and the average board length in inches. Solid strip is usually 2 1/4 or 3 1/4 inches wide; plank is 5 inches and up. Bundles run from 18 to 24 square feet. If the bundle is labelled in board feet rather than square feet, ask the yard for the coverage figure — they are not the same number.

Leave the pattern on plank stagger for a normal install. Switch to diagonal if the boards run at 45 degrees to the joists and the walls, and expect the waste to jump by five points.

Solid vs engineered quantities

The square footage is identical. What changes is the waste and what you can do with the offcuts. Solid strip flooring is nailed down and every board has to land on a joist pattern, so short offcuts get used up at the start of rows. Engineered planks are often floated or glued, are usually longer and wider, and produce fewer but larger offcuts.

Budget 10% on engineered in a rectangular room and 12% on solid random-length strip. Both go up by five points on a diagonal and by two on an L-shaped room. Full numbers in the flooring waste factor guide.

Width is the other lever on price and on movement. A 2 1/4 inch strip costs less per square foot, cups less in a humid summer and hides subfloor imperfection. A 5 inch plank costs 20% to 40% more, looks contemporary, and moves visibly with the seasons — expect hairline gaps in February that close again in July. Anything over 5 inches wide is generally glued as well as nailed, which adds $1.20 to $1.80 a square foot in adhesive and labour that no material calculator will show you.

Random length bundles explained

A bundle of solid strip holds boards from about 12 inches to 84 inches, mixed. You do not choose. Roughly one board in six is a short, under 18 inches, and shorts can only go where the stagger rule allows them — which in a narrow room is nowhere useful.

The practical answer is racking. Open six to eight bundles at once, lay the boards out dry in front of the work, and pick lengths to keep the end joints at least 6 inches apart while using the shorts in closets and under furniture. Racking is what turns a 15% waste job into a 10% waste job, and it costs you an hour.

Engineered flooring is usually sold in a single length or in two lengths, which makes the plan predictable. That is most of the reason its waste factor is lower.

Before any of those numbers matter, take a moisture reading. Solid hardwood wants to arrive within 2 percentage points of the subfloor's moisture content, and within 4 points for plank over 5 inches wide. A pin meter costs $40 and a reading takes a minute. Wood laid at 12% over a subfloor at 7% will cup within one heating season, and no amount of extra material in the order fixes a floor that was installed wet.

Direction also changes the subfloor work. Running boards parallel to the joists on a wood subfloor requires a second layer of plywood or a diagonal underlayment, because nailing into the flex of the sheathing will lead to squeaks within two heating seasons.

Finish is the last decision that affects the order. Prefinished boards arrive with a factory cured aluminium oxide coat and can be walked on the same day, but the micro-bevel between boards is permanent. Site-finished floors are sanded flat and coated in place, which gives a seamless surface and lets you match a colour exactly, at the cost of three or four days of sanding, coating and curing with the room out of use. Site finishing also needs about 5% more material, because edge boards get trimmed after laying rather than before.

Common mistakes

  1. Not acclimating. Solid hardwood needs three to ten days in the room at the humidity it will live in, checked with a moisture meter. Installed wet, it cups; installed dry, it gaps. This is the number one warranty claim in the category.
  2. Buying one bundle short and topping up next month. Wood is a natural product and colour varies between runs. Buy the whole job in one order.
  3. Ignoring the 3/4 inch expansion gap. Solid wood needs it at every wall, covered by the baseboard or the shoe.
  4. Under-ordering on a whole-floor job. The arithmetic for a large open plan is worked out in how much flooring for 1,000 square feet.
  5. Keeping no attic stock. Two bundles, stored flat and indoors. A refinish can save a scratched floor; nothing saves a board that was never made again.

How many square feet are in a bundle of hardwood?

Between 18 and 24 square feet for most strip and plank products. The exact figure is printed on the bundle, and it varies between widths of the same product line, so check before you multiply.

What is the difference between board feet and square feet?

Board feet measure volume — one board foot is 144 cubic inches, or a piece 12 by 12 by 1 inch. Finished flooring is sold by the square foot of coverage, which is what you need here. Board feet only matter when you are buying rough lumber.

Why is random-length flooring harder to estimate?

Because a bundle holds a mix of lengths and you cannot choose them. You end up with short pieces you cannot place without breaking the stagger rule. Budget 12% waste on random length, not 10%.

Does running the boards diagonally really cost 15%?

Yes, and sometimes more in a small room. Every board meets a wall at 45 degrees, so every perimeter board is a mitre cut and the offcut is usually the wrong angle to reuse.
